Milestone gets its Lions Den.

For many years Gloucester Lions Club has had a special relationship with the
Milestone Special School. We were recently challenged to provide the
funding for an outside classroom.
The object of the classroom is to enable the pupils to learn through the
natural environment, to get some exercise, to learn to work as a team
and to have a new stimulus of learning and motivation. It is intended
that when a class is scheduled to use the facility they will normally do
so irrespective of the weather. We have therefore also provided a range
of waterproof clothing and footwear.
Lion Geoff Spence, who is pictured cutting the ribbon at the opening
ceremony, said “It is impossible to visit the school without being
immensely impressed and humbled by the dedication and patience of the
staff and to experience the joy on the faces of the children”.

Help for Heroes
We have also run a Race Night
at the Hatherley Manor Hotel with all proceeds going to this most
worthwhile organisation. Thanks to generous sponsorship and donations we
were pleased to be in a position where we were able to hand over £2032
to that fund.
Hoist for your local girl
We have also been able to donate the necessary £1200 to
top up the funds of an appeal to provide a local seriously ill girl with
a hoist which was necessary to improve her quality of life.

Fund Raising
Currently our fund raising relies primarily upon collections at local
supermarkets. We also enjoy the privilege of being the only charity
permitted to collect at the annual Gloucester City Carnival.
We have also undertaken street collections in the City to support victims of
the Pakistan Floods (£600) and the Japanese earthquake (£743).
Race Nights
The Club is noted for its “Race Night” team
that has developed a very professional edge to their presentation. Whilst
the club does run its own annual “Race Night” the team is mainly used
to run events for other groups, enabling those organisations to raise money
for their own favourite causes.
School Projects.
After
two successful years of running our Healthy Eating campaign in local schools
we switched our attention to an inter-schools quiz for junior schools.
Having completed our sixth year it is proving to be a very popular event.

Family Haven
Club members continue to support the
Family Haven,
a local charity providing day time respite aimed at improving the life of
vulnerable families. We are proud to be associated with this charity
The present members are convinced that with even one or two more members we
could once again begin to raise money by organizing a range of more
challenging, interesting and productive events.
